Introduction

The Boschveld Breed

The Boschveld Free Range Chickens were bred on Mantsole Ranch, near Radium. It was bred from crosses between Venda, Ovambo and Matabele chickens and is recognised as a synthetic indigenous chicken breed.

In general, they are light brown with white feathers in between, which gives the Boschveld Chicken a unique colouring that blends into Africa. Alertness and survival skills are strong traits when it comes to defense of predators. Hardiness is an inbred trait for withstanding poultry diseases and producing under free-range conditions. The Cocks are strong, aggressive and with a noble conformation.

Raising Guide

Everything you need to raise a healthy, productive Boschveld flock — from day-old chick to peak laying hen.

This guide is built around the Boschveld breed's known characteristics - its hardiness, active foraging instincts and dual-purpose genetics - rather than generic poultry advice. Whether you are starting your first flock or scaling an established operation, the information here reflects the Boschveld's specific behaviour, nutritional needs and production potential.

Experienced keepers will find the breed-specific nuances useful; newcomers will find a clear, practical roadmap from day one.

Rearing Chickens

  • They are very small and fragile; treat them with love and care.
  • Put up an infrared light ± 1m from the floor.
  • Put coarse sawdust as bedding, not fine sawdust.
  • Put down 5L or 2L water fonts with some electrolytes or booster in the water.
  • Place large parts of food on the ground; wet 1/3 of feed.
  • Do not place food or water near infrared light.
  • There must be enough space for chicks to move away from light.
  • One infra red light is enough for 250 (two hundred and fifty) chicks.
  • Feed pullet starter to hens (not broiler starter).
  • After 7 (seven) days, during the day, put infrared lights off when temperature is higher than 20◦C.
  • Allow sunlight in on chicks; this will develop feathers much quicker.
  • Keep to inoculation program.
  • Feed AD LIB till 4 (four) weeks old.
  • Refresh water 3 x daily with cool water.
  • After 14 (fourteen) days, let them outside during the day but allow access back into the cage.
  • If chicks start to peck each other, you need to add more feed trays or pans.
  • Remove sick or weak chicks and keep them separate until healthy and strong.
  • Do not allow strangers into chick houses. Keep good bio security in tact.
  • Visit chicks often to see if all is in order.
  • From 21 (twenty-one) days, put Viro-kill in drinking water at 10ml per 10L of water.

  • Keep 10 (ten) chickens per square meter.
  • Put a bit of sawdust on the floor.
  • Feed as per table data in the feed file.
  • Keep inoculation program up.
  • Give an antibody boost once every 3 (three) weeks.
  • Give Viro-kill in water every 2 (two) weeks: 10 ml per 10L.
  • Separate all sick and weak chicks – sick bay.
  • Treat with medication.
  • Put back after strong and healthy.
  • Feed pullet grower to hens (not broiler grower).
  • Visit cage often to check for any strange habits, i.e., sneezing, coughing, etc.
  • Remove bedding every 6 (six) weeks.
  • Disinfect cage floor.
  • Give cool water at all times.
  • 1/3 (one third) of feed must be mixed with water and given wet to chickens. Make feed like Pronutro porridge must be “sloppy”.

  • Put in a cage for the outside range.
  • 10 (ten) Chickens per square meter inside.
  • Range can be any size.
  • From 18 (eighteen) weeks old, give each laying hen 120g (one hundred and twenty grams) 105 layers mash (NOT CRUMBS OR PELLETS).
  • Place 210L drums (cut open in length) on the ground, fill half full with saw dust use as egg laying box.
  • One half drum enough for 50 (fifty) layers.
  • Put one tube feeder per 50 (fifty) hens.
  • Put one bell drinker per 100 (one hundred) hens.
  • Pick up eggs 4 (four) times per day.
  • Feed every day at the same time.
  • Wet 1/3 of the feed.
  • Keep a good record of daily egg production.
  • Remove sick and weak layers; keep separate until strong and healthy.
  • Keep inoculation program up.
  • De-worm every 4 (four) months with Ecomycrin in water – always give cool water.
  • Detox with liver flush.
  • Find new markets for eggs all the time.
  • Impress the housewife – she feeds her family.

BOSCHVELD CHICKENS

Housing & Mobile Cages

The Boschveld free-range housing system is unique and was developed by Pieter and Mike Bosch on Mantsole Ranch, Radium. The wagon wheel has a range area for all four chicken houses and a building to store feed and eggs. All doors open into a circle with a water tank in the centre for biosecurity and easy access to the chicken houses.

The Boschveld system is designed to meet all requirements of BRC (British Retail Consortium) and GlobalGAP certification. Animal welfare and all five freedoms for poultry were the key factors in the design. No environmental control systems are in any poultry house. The design and breed are to have a very low carbon footprint and use minimum fossil fuel.

A maximum of 10 chickens per square meter in the house and 1,5 meter per chicken on the range. Shade and soil type on the range is very important, so site location must be selected properly.
